Short answer: Healthy semen is thick and gel-like at the moment of ejaculation, then liquefies into a runnier, more watery fluid within 15–30 minutes. Both states are normal — the question is not whether semen is thick or runny, but whether it changes from one to the other on schedule. Normal volume is around 1.4–5 mL, roughly half a teaspoon to a teaspoon.
Worth checking: semen still thick, stringy or clumped after 60 minutes; or consistently watery with low volume.
Most articles on semen appearance treat "thick" and "runny" as if one is healthy and the other isn't. That framing is wrong, and it's the reason this question generates so much anxiety.
Healthy semen is both, in sequence. Understanding that sequence answers almost every question people have about texture.
What healthy semen looks like
Before a sample goes anywhere near a microscope, andrology labs record a set of macroscopic properties — appearance, volume, liquefaction, viscosity and pH — following the WHO laboratory manual for the examination and processing of human semen, 6th edition. Here is what "normal" looks like for each.

The mechanism behind the texture change is worth knowing, because it explains nearly everything below. At ejaculation, the seminal vesicles contribute a protein called semenogelin, which causes semen to coagulate into a gel — biologically useful, because it helps hold the ejaculate in place after intercourse. The prostate simultaneously contributes prostate-specific antigen (PSA), an enzyme that gradually digests semenogelin and liquefies the gel, freeing the sperm to swim. That's the rheology of semen in one paragraph.
Is healthy sperm thick or runny?
Both — in that order. Thick at ejaculation, runny within half an hour.
This is why when you look matters more than what you see. Semen inspected two minutes after ejaculation should be thick and gelatinous. The same sample forty minutes later should be noticeably thinner and more uniform. Neither observation on its own means anything; the transition between them is the actual signal.
A sample that is thin and watery immediately at ejaculation, or one that is still thick and stringy an hour later, is where you'd start asking questions.
The simple home check: collect a sample in a clean container, leave it at room temperature, and look again at 30 and 60 minutes. If it has become runny and pourable, liquefaction is normal. That's the only visual assessment that carries real information — and it still tells you nothing about sperm count.
What is thick sperm?
"Thick sperm" describes two different things that get confused, and the distinction is clinically important.
Normal coagulation
Every ejaculate is thick to begin with. Gel-like, jelly-like, sometimes with visible clumps or strands. This is semenogelin doing its job. It is not a problem, and it resolves by itself.
Hyperviscosity
This is the abnormal version: semen that has fully liquefied but remains thicker and more resistant to flow than it should be. Labs test it by letting the sample drop from a pipette — normal semen falls in discrete drops; hyperviscous semen forms a thread longer than 2 cm.
Du Plessis et al. (2013) estimate hyperviscosity affects 12–29% of ejaculates and can contribute to male factor infertility both in natural conception and in IVF, because sperm physically struggle to progress through the thickened medium. Harchegani et al. (2019) reach the same conclusion, and Barbagallo et al. (2021) found higher oxidative stress and weakened antioxidant defences in hyperviscous samples.
Delayed liquefaction
A related but separate finding: the sample stays gelled beyond 60 minutes. Usually points to reduced prostatic enzyme output, often from prostatic inflammation.

What causes sperm to become thicker?
In rough order of likelihood:
- You looked too early. Genuinely the most common answer. Pre-liquefaction semen is meant to be thick.
- Dehydration. Semen is largely water. Reduced fluid intake means smaller, more concentrated, thicker-appearing ejaculate. See hydration and semen quality.
- Long abstinence. More stored fluid and cells, denser sample. Standard advice before a semen analysis is 2–7 days of abstinence for exactly this reason — it standardises the variable.
- Infection or inflammation. Prostatitis and other genital tract infections raise white cell counts and can thicken semen, usually with a yellow-green tint. This is pyospermia — see bacterial infections and male fertility.
- Hormonal factors. Low testosterone reduces the output of the seminal vesicles and prostate, which lowers volume — and lower volume reads as thicker. More in testosterone and sperm quality.
- Heat, oxidative stress and lifestyle. Frequent sauna use, hot baths, smoking and heavy drinking all raise oxidative stress in seminal plasma, which the Barbagallo study links to hyperviscosity.
What does watery sperm look like?
Watery semen is thin and translucent rather than opaque — closer to skimmed milk or plain water than to the usual cloudy whitish-grey. It often comes with a smaller volume, and may look almost clear.
The common causes:
- Frequent ejaculation. Ejaculating multiple times in a day doesn't give the accessory glands time to refill. Thin, low-volume semen after the second or third ejaculation in a day is completely expected and reverses within a day or two.
- Low sperm concentration. Sperm contribute little to volume but do contribute to opacity. A genuinely low count can make semen look thinner and more translucent. This is the one cause worth measuring rather than assuming.
- Retrograde ejaculation. Semen travelling backwards into the bladder rather than out through the urethra. Associated with diabetes, some prostate surgery, and certain medications including alpha-blockers. The tell is cloudy urine after ejaculation.
- Zinc or nutritional deficiency. Zinc is heavily concentrated in seminal plasma and contributes to its consistency.
- Low testosterone. Reduces accessory gland output and therefore volume.
Occasional watery semen is not a concern. Consistently watery, low-volume semen over several weeks is worth a test — not because watery semen is dangerous, but because it's one of the few appearance changes that genuinely correlates with something measurable. Why is my boyfriend's sperm so thick?
Almost certainly because you're seeing it fresh. Semen observed within minutes of ejaculation is thick and gel-like in every healthy man — that is the normal, expected state, not a sign of anything unusual about him.
A few situational factors make it thicker still, none of which are problems:
- He hasn't ejaculated in several days
- He's dehydrated, or has been drinking
- He's been unwell, or training hard in the heat

What would be worth mentioning to a doctor: if it stays thick and stringy well past an hour, if it's yellow-green or smells foul, or if he has pain during or after ejaculation.
Why is my sperm so thick like cottage cheese?
Three explanations, in order of likelihood:
1. Normal coagulation with clumping (most likely). Pre-liquefaction semen frequently has visible white clumps or curds within a clearer gel. That lumpy, curd-like appearance is semenogelin coagulation — it's the same thing described as "jelly-like sperm" or "clumpy sperm". Give it 30 minutes and it should smooth out into a uniform liquid.
2. Hyperviscosity or delayed liquefaction. If the curd-like clumps are still there after an hour, the sample isn't liquefying properly. That's a real finding, and the semen rheology literature links it to reduced fertility potential. Worth flagging to a GP or getting a semen analysis.

One clarification worth making, since the phrase "cottage cheese" comes from elsewhere in medicine: cottage-cheese discharge is the classic description of vaginal thrush, not of semen. If the observation follows intercourse, it may not be the ejaculate at all — and a yeast infection in either partner is worth ruling out if there's itching or irritation.
What texture doesn't tell you
Here's the limit of all of this. Liquefaction is one macroscopic observation among several, and macroscopic observation is the first and least informative stage of a semen assessment. It can flag hyperviscosity. It cannot tell you:
- How many sperm are present
- What proportion are moving, and how well
- What proportion are normally formed
- Whether their DNA is intact
Those four things are what determine fertility potential, and every one of them requires magnification. A textbook-perfect sample — right colour, right volume, liquefying at 20 minutes — can contain no sperm at all.
Semen quality also swings considerably between samples in the same man. Illness in the previous three months, heat exposure, sleep debt and stress all shift the numbers, which is why natural variation makes single observations unreliable.
