Short answer: Healthy semen is a cloudy whitish-grey, sometimes with a faint ivory or pale-yellow tint. It leaves the body as a thick gel and liquefies into a runnier fluid within about 15–30 minutes. Colour on its own is a weak indicator of fertility — it tells you something about the seminal fluid, not about the sperm swimming in it.
When to get checked: any colour change that lasts more than a few days, or comes with pain, fever, blood, or a foul smell.
Most men who look closely at their ejaculate wonder at some point whether what they are seeing is normal. It's a reasonable question — semen is one of the few bodily fluids you can inspect without a lab — but it's also one of the most misunderstood signals in male reproductive health.

What colour of sperm is healthy?
Healthy semen is whitish-grey and slightly cloudy or opalescent. That's the reference description used in the WHO laboratory manual for the examination and processing of human semen (6th edition), which is the standard andrology labs worldwide use when they assess a sample macroscopically before it ever goes under a microscope.
Two things are worth separating here, because they get conflated constantly:
- Semen is the whole fluid. It is roughly 95–98% seminal plasma — secretions from the seminal vesicles, prostate, and bulbourethral glands. That plasma is what gives semen its colour.
- Sperm are the cells suspended in it. They are microscopic, individually transparent, and make up only a tiny fraction of the volume.
So when someone asks "what colour is healthy sperm?" the honest answer is that sperm themselves have no visible colour at all. You are looking at the fluid they travel in. This distinction is the single most useful thing to understand about semen appearance, and it explains why so much of the advice online overstates what colour can tell you.

Clear semen deserves its own note. It commonly follows a short abstinence period — ejaculating several times in a day thins the fluid because the accessory glands haven't refilled. What colour is the most fertile sperm?
There isn't one. No shade of semen predicts high fertility, and no fertility clinic anywhere grades a sample by how white it is.
This is worth saying plainly because "most fertile sperm colour" is a very common search, and the internet is full of confident answers to it. The reality is that the three parameters that actually determine male fertility potential — sperm concentration, motility, and morphology — are all invisible to the naked eye. They require magnification.
The sixth edition of the WHO manual lists appearance and colour under macroscopic examination, alongside volume, viscosity, liquefaction and pH. These are screening observations. They can flag a possible infection or the presence of blood, prompting further investigation. They are not fertility measurements, and the manual does not treat them as such.
A perfectly normal-looking whitish-grey sample can have a sperm concentration of zero. That is not a hypothetical — azoospermia is typically invisible without a microscope.

What colour is clean sperm?
"Clean" isn't a clinical term, but it's a common way of asking two different things, so it's worth answering both.
If you mean "free of infection": healthy, uninfected semen is whitish-grey with a mild alkaline, chlorine-like smell. Infected semen more often looks yellow-green, may be thicker or cloudier than usual, and frequently comes with other symptoms — burning on urination, pelvic or perineal ache, discomfort at ejaculation, or fever. The underlying finding in many of these cases is pyospermia (also called leukocytospermia), defined as more than one million white blood cells per millilitre of ejaculate. Crucially, though, plenty of genital infections cause no colour change at all. Chlamydia in particular is frequently asymptomatic in men. Normal-looking semen does not rule out an STI, and only testing does.
If you mean "free of blood": that's haematospermia — pink, red, rust-brown or occasionally near-black semen. It's usually benign, most often caused by low-grade inflammation of the prostate or seminal tract, and often resolves on its own. The British Association of Urological Surgeons gives low-grade infection or inflammation of the prostate as the commonest cause. But the NHS advises getting it checked by a GP regardless, and Akhter et al. (2013) conclude that men over 40, and those with persistent or recurrent episodes, warrant a fuller urological workup. What colour does unhealthy sperm look like?
Here's the honest framing: there is no colour that means "the sperm are unhealthy". There are colours that suggest something is going on in the reproductive tract that is worth investigating — and some of those conditions can, secondarily, affect sperm quality.

Both Mayo Clinic and the International Society for Sexual Medicine emphasise the same point: most colour changes are short-lived and harmless, and it's persistence plus accompanying symptoms that matters, not the shade in isolation.

Can dehydration affect sperm colour?
Yes — indirectly, and usually mildly.
Semen is mostly water, so hydration status influences it in two ways. First, dehydration reduces ejaculate volume; with the same cells suspended in less fluid, the sample looks thicker and more concentrated, and can appear a deeper off-white or pale yellow. Second — and this is the bigger effect — when you're dehydrated your urine is far more concentrated, and small residual amounts left in the urethra tint the ejaculate passing through it noticeably yellow.
That second mechanism explains why yellow semen is so commonly reported first thing in the morning, when overnight urine is at its most concentrated.
Volume matters clinically, though. Roberts and Jarvi (2009) set out why an adequate ejaculate volume is needed to transport sperm into the female reproductive tract, and the WHO 6th edition lower reference limit for volume is 1.4 mL. What dehydration does not do is turn semen green, red, brown or black. Those need a different explanation.
Does sperm colour change with age?
Colour itself changes very little. Volume and consistency do.
There is no age-related pigment shift in semen — a healthy 55-year-old and a healthy 25-year-old both produce whitish-grey ejaculate. What does change with age is everything around the colour:
- Volume declines. Prostate and seminal vesicle output falls gradually from roughly the mid-thirties onward, so ejaculate volume tends to decrease. Less fluid can make the sample look slightly more concentrated or opaque.
- Sperm parameters decline. Johnson et al. (2015), in a systematic review of age-dependent declines in human semen quality, found consistent age-related reductions in semen volume, motility and normal morphology. A 2020 analysis found men over 50 were roughly 2.2× more likely to have low semen volume and nearly 12× more likely to have impaired progressive motility than men aged 21–30. None of this is visible to the eye.
- Blood becomes more significant. Haematospermia in a man over 40 is more likely to warrant investigation than the same finding at 25 — not because it's usually sinister, but because the pre-test probability of an underlying prostate condition is higher.

What semen colour genuinely can and can't tell you
Pulling it together:
Colour is useful for: spotting blood, flagging a possible infection, and prompting a GP visit when something changes and stays changed.
Colour is useless for: estimating sperm count, motility, morphology, DNA integrity, or your chances of conceiving.
Semen quality also varies substantially from one sample to the next in the same man — abstinence period, illness in the previous three months, heat exposure, sleep and stress all move the numbers. That natural variation is one reason a single glance at a single ejaculate tells you very little, and why clinicians usually want more than one sample before drawing conclusions.
When to see a doctor
Book an appointment if you have:
- Any colour change lasting more than a few days
- Yellow-green semen, particularly with pain or burning
- Pink, red, brown or black semen at any age
- Blood in semen and you're over 40, or it keeps recurring
- Fever, swelling, testicular pain, or a foul smell alongside the change
- Pain on ejaculation or urination
