Why Is My Sperm Yellow, Green or Grey?

Short answer: Yellow semen is most often caused by concentrated urine in the urethra, dehydration, long abstinence or B-vitamin supplements — and is usually harmless. Green or yellow-green semen more often signals infection and should be seen by a doctor. Grey is normal; grey and chunky is normal liquefaction, not curdling.

Red flag: discolouration that persists beyond a few days, or comes with burning, pelvic pain, fever or a foul smell.

Discoloured semen is alarming largely because nobody prepares you for it. The fluid is usually whitish-grey, so when it turns bright yellow or takes on a green cast, the assumption is that something is badly wrong.

Most of the time it isn't. But the causes differ meaningfully by shade, and a couple of them do need treatment. Here's what each colour actually means.

Why does a man's sperm turn yellow?

Yellow is by far the most commonly reported semen colour change, and there are six realistic explanations. In rough order of how often they're the answer:

1. Residual urine in the urethra

Semen and urine share the same exit route. If there's concentrated urine sitting in the urethra, the ejaculate passing through picks up its pigment. This is the single most common cause, and it's why yellow semen turns up disproportionately in the morning — overnight urine is at its most concentrated. Urinating before sex or masturbation usually eliminates it. Cleveland Clinic also lists it first, and notes that yellow semen "usually isn't a cause for concern".

2. Dehydration

Covered in the next section, but the short version: less water in, more concentrated everything out.

3. Long abstinence

Semen that has been stored for a while before ejaculation contains a higher proportion of older cells and oxidised secretions, which can give it a deeper, more yellow appearance. It typically returns to normal after the next couple of ejaculations. This is also why abstinence period is standardised (2–7 days) before a clinical semen analysis — it materially changes the sample.

4. Supplements and diet

High-dose B vitamins — riboflavin (B2) in particular — turn urine fluorescent yellow and can tint semen too. Multivitamins, energy drinks, turmeric, and foods with strong pigments can all contribute. This is cosmetic and harmless. Worth knowing if you're taking a male fertility supplement and suddenly notice a change.

5. Infection or inflammation

Prostatitis, epididymitis, urinary tract infections and some STIs can produce yellow semen — usually more of a yellow-green, usually thicker, and usually with symptoms. The underlying mechanism is white blood cells in the ejaculate, a finding called pyospermia or leukocytospermia, defined as more than one million leukocytes per millilitre. 6. Jaundice (uncommon)

Elevated bilirubin from a liver condition can yellow semen along with the skin and the whites of the eyes. If you're seeing yellow semen and yellowing sclera, that's a GP appointment today, not next week. Our article on the liver and fertility covers the connection.

Can dehydration cause yellow sperm?

Yes — and it's one of the most common and most easily fixed causes.

Dehydration works through two mechanisms:

  • Concentrated urine. When you're under-hydrated, your kidneys conserve water and urine becomes darker and more concentrated. Any residual amount in the urethra tints the ejaculate that follows it far more strongly than dilute urine would.
  • Reduced ejaculate volume. Semen is largely water. Lower total body water means the seminal vesicles and prostate produce less fluid, so the ejaculate is smaller, thicker and more concentrated in appearance.

The fix is boring but effective: consistent fluid intake across the day rather than a large volume just before. If you're also drinking a lot of alcohol or caffeine, both increase fluid loss — and alcohol has independent effects on sperm quality beyond hydration.

Volume is worth taking seriously in its own right. The WHO 6th edition lower reference limit for ejaculate volume is 1.4 mL, and Roberts and Jarvi outline why adequate volume matters for transporting sperm into the female reproductive tract. Rule of thumb: if yellow semen clears up within a few days of drinking more water and urinating before sex, it was dehydration. If it doesn't, look at the other causes.

Why does my sperm look green?

Green semen is the one colour on this list that usually does mean infection. It should be assessed by a GP or sexual health clinic rather than waited out.

The green tint comes from a high concentration of white blood cells — the same pigment mechanism that makes infected nasal mucus green. Neutrophils contain myeloperoxidase, a green-pigmented enzyme, and in sufficient numbers it shows.

Likely causes:

  • Prostatitis — inflammation or infection of the prostate. Often accompanied by perineal ache, pain on ejaculation, urinary frequency.
  • Epididymitis — inflammation of the epididymis, often with testicular tenderness and swelling.
  • Urinary tract infection — covered in the next section.
  • Sexually transmitted infections — gonorrhoea and chlamydia in particular. Both are treatable; both can affect fertility if left alone. See STIs and male fertility.

This matters for fertility, not just comfort. A 2020 review in Translational Andrology and Urology covers how leukocytospermia raises reactive oxygen species in the ejaculate, and elevated oxidative stress is associated with sperm DNA fragmentation — damage that a standard semen analysis won't detect but that can affect embryo development.

Treatment is typically a course of antibiotics. Sperm production takes around 74 days, so it's worth retesting roughly three months after treatment rather than immediately. Note also that some antibiotics themselves temporarily affect sperm parameters.

Is yellow sperm a symptom of a UTI?

It can be, but it's rarely the only symptom — and yellow semen alone is a poor reason to assume a UTI.

Urinary tract infections are much less common in men than in women, because the longer male urethra makes ascending infection harder. When men do get them, they're more likely to involve the prostate and be classed as complicated.

If a UTI is behind your yellow semen, you'd normally expect at least one of:

  • Burning or stinging when urinating
  • Needing to urinate more often, or urgently
  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  • Lower abdominal, perineal or lower back discomfort
  • Pain during or after ejaculation
  • Fever or feeling generally unwell (suggests the kidneys or prostate are involved — see a doctor promptly)

Yellow semen with none of the above is far more likely to be dehydration, abstinence or supplements. Yellow-green semen with any of the above should be assessed.

Why is my husband's sperm chunky and greyish?

In almost every case, this is normal — and it's a timing artefact rather than a problem.

Semen doesn't leave the body as a uniform liquid. It's ejaculated as a coagulated gel, thanks to a protein called semenogelin secreted by the seminal vesicles. Over the next 15–30 minutes, an enzyme from the prostate — prostate-specific antigen, the same PSA measured in blood tests — breaks that gel down in a process called liquefaction.

So if you're observing semen in the first few minutes after ejaculation, chunky, gelatinous, lumpy or clumped is exactly what you should expect. Grey-white gel with jelly-like clumps is textbook normal.

The WHO 6th edition manual treats liquefaction as a standard macroscopic parameter for this reason: labs deliberately wait for it before assessing anything else, because you can't reliably count sperm in a gel.

When chunky is worth investigating: if the sample is still thick, stringy or clumped after 60 minutes, that's delayed liquefaction or hyperviscosity. Du Plessis et al. (2013) estimate semen hyperviscosity affects 12–29% of samples and note it can impair fertility both naturally and in IVF, because sperm physically struggle to move through the thickened medium. Harchegani et al. (2019) reach similar conclusions.

When chunky is a red flag: if the clumps are yellow-green, smell foul, or come with pain, that's infection rather than liquefaction. And if the texture is genuinely cottage-cheese-like and accompanied by itching or irritation — in either partner — a yeast infection is worth ruling out. That combination is uncommon in semen, though; it's far more often described in vaginal discharge and mistakenly attributed to the ejaculate.

What does grey sperm look like?

Grey semen looks like normal semen. This is the answer that surprises people.

The clinical description of healthy ejaculate is "whitish-grey" or "grey-opalescent". Mayo Clinic describes semen as "typically a white-grey color". A grey cast is not a warning sign — it's the baseline.

What people usually mean when they describe semen as "grey" and feel uneasy about it:

  • Grey and translucent, thinner than usual — often frequent ejaculation. If it persists, it can accompany low sperm concentration. See why is my semen clear.
  • Grey and gelatinous — normal pre-liquefaction semen, as above.
  • Grey shading toward brown or rust — this is different. Brown discolouration indicates older blood, and warrants a GP appointment. See blood in semen.

  • Discolouration alongside difficulty conceiving

What colour won't tell you

Correcting a colour change doesn't tell you your sperm are healthy. Colour reflects the seminal fluid; fertility depends on the cells inside it — concentration, motility and morphology, none of which are visible.
